5 • Phase One: The Main Line
The original idea was that the shelf would appear as a cove light. That's been pretty much adhered to. Along three walls the shelf is either a single or double track. The shelf itself is 3/4 oak plywood hung on the wall with a longitudinal angle bracket that's hidden from view. It gives the shelf the appearance of being stuck to the wall — no visible support. An LED strip circles the room along the wall behind the track roadbed, though it's visible on the camera feed. The LED is color programmable, which is distracting but fun. The large, three track shelf is supported by brackets that are hidden behind woodwork above the shelf. All neat and tidy.
Holes were cut through the bookshelves for track passthrough. In the corner of the room the shelf passes behind the chimney for our wood stove. The helix in Phase Three will circle the chimney.
The trains are running. Hard to clear dust when the track is over your head, so any session begins with a run around the shelf by the vacuum train (pictured below). Once around the room is a scale mile.
There's an early video showing a test during construction at the bottom.
